SANS SPACE SANS PLACE
embroidery on cotton, HDR images, 2020
This work draws attention to the new-found emptiness of our public spaces since the social restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Through the placement of an embroidered message the size of a typical advertising poster, the eeriness of a community space without its community members is highlighted. The text “a place without its people is just a space” conveys this message with its bold font and straight-to-the-point black and white format. The resolved images draw focus to the structural components of each space with the placement of the banner illuminating the absence of people rendering these structures somewhat useless.
