S.D.F. (SANS DOMICILE FIXE)
steel, organza, black spray paint, embroidery thread, 2021
S.D.F. (Sans Domicile Fixe) is a sculptural work that looks at impermanence. It is an expansion of the work House (2021). S.D.F. looks at the uncertainty surrounding housing situations for many people during the pandemic. With continuing lockdowns and an unstable job market, many find themselves unable to pay rent or acquire permanent shelter. This very quickly puts them at risk of eviction or rough sleeping. This work uses a covering of organza that when pulled over the solid steel frame of the house, creates a space representative of the home. However, as soon as the organza cover is removed, the house is left as an open and unfinished space rendering it uninhabitable. It is through this symbolism that this work comments on the many people and families currently at risk of homelessness or eviction.
